Learn By Doing Grant Application - due February 19th

Students can apply and receive funding for research costs, conference attendance and presentations, international travel for study abroad, and more.  They are selective and you must apply, but see the attached PDFs for Sociology LBD and the other for Anthropology & Geography LBD for more specific information about what can be applied for and the amounts involved.

Thanks to substantial donations this year, we are poised to award over $20,000 for Learn by Doing student activities such as senior project research, attendance and presentations at professional conferences, research activities, and international travel for study abroad programs.

How to Apply

To secure funding, students were required to submit formal proposals and their resumes to the faculty Learn-by-Doing committee with awards from $100 to $1000. We will be sending out a call for proposals via the weekly email.

Student Learn by Doing Projects

Students have been creative in their use of Learn by Doing fundsBelow are just a few examples:

  • Elizabeth Barnes secured a $400 grant for airfare to Kauai to gather data for her senior project applying GIS to conservation of endangered birds. In doing so, she caught the attention of The Nature Conservancy and she beat out 700 applicants to secure a job!

  • Dr. Stacey Rucas and a group of exceptional Anthropology-Geography students finalized a Learn By Doing behavioral ecology research project inspired by the pandemic and individual reports of stress resulting from their perceived loss of control. The group used a mixed-methods approach to examine formative (adverse childhood experiences) and current ecological stressors (home stress, mortality and morbidity cues, Covid-19 risks) on locus of control for college-aged individuals. Their final product: “Are you in Control?” took the top spot, 1st Place Award at the California Workshop on Evolutionary Social Sciences (C-WESS) research conference and competition in July, 2020.

  • Three students received partial support for study abroad opportunities in Ecuador, Iceland, and Thailand.

  • Four students attended the Women in Archaeology symposium at the annual meeting of the Society for California Archaeology in Sacramento.

Donate

We hope to continue to expand the Learn by Doing Fund in order to offer larger amounts of funding to more students. If you are interested in donating, you can donate online or contact the Social Sciences Department. Every dollar goes directly to student projects.
